Self Publishing

In November last year, I was thrilled to have a few cards accepted for publication in a craft magazine. For me, it was all about being validated. I'm not very good at self-validation. And I hoped it would be the beginning of something wonderful. I naively told friends and family about it...

After nearly 8 months of my cards being put on the back burner, and no real indication of when they might actually be used, I withdrew my cards and had them returned. Why? Because at least half of the products I've used on these cards are either retired, or are about to be retired. I definitely didn't want to be the fool in the magazine with cards using discontinued stock.

Feeling extremely foolish, I intended on shoving these cards in a drawer, (and most likely pulling them out when I felt the need to chastise myself over something silly). But since I went to the effort of writing up instructions and creating a third card to complete the set, I thought I'd "publish" them myself.

And if you feel at all interested in reading the instructions, I've put them in a pdf for easy download.

  4. This is a truly stunning set, my friend. Whoever didn't publish these cards, is a fool. Never let the fools let you down, they're not worth your artwork! xoxo

  5. I think your work is stunning, absolutely gorgeous. I'd publish you in the blink of an eye. I realise that doesn't count for much, but I hope it might help you to validate. The magazine is very silly not to publish these delightful cards. xxx

  6. Gorgeous cards Danielle, interesting that you were given no timeframe for publication. Is that normal? Don't worry about retired paper, it gives people the opportunity with the same retired paper, to use it. Have you thought of submitting to American publications, Cards and Papercrafts? they definitley work on a specified publication date.

Hang in there girl, you do some amazing work, never doubt that! And good on you for taking the publication initiative yourself.

  9. Agree! Magazine was silly enough to sit on them and it's their loss and all of your followers gain. This is a gorgeous set of cards, vibrant and bright, with terrific, well written instructions. Lucky us!

  13. I think what I think has already been said and validated in the comments above. Your work is stunning Danielle, and it's the mags loss for not publishing your beautiful work quicker. Seems to be quite a clicky little group from what I've seen and heard, who wants that? I think you should submit to other mags, like I've said I think 'cards' would snap you up in a second.
